Sidewalk, Drainage, and Street Improvements near Hazel Court and Iowa Avenue

The City and County of Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is moving forward with a design and engineering project to eliminate gaps in sidewalks, improve drainage, and improve street infrastructure in the Mar Lee neighborhood. This project is part of a larger effort by the City to improve pedestrian safety and mobility.

Construction Update: April 4, 2025

STATUS: The new asphalt down into the cul-de-sac is a wonderful sight! As curb / gutter / sidewalk concrete progresses throughout the neighborhood, so will the placement of asphalt. Crews expect to finish up the inlets at Hooker Ct. this week. Fire hydrant work on the southeast corner of S. Hazel Ct. and W. Florida Ave. is complete and now the crews are working on curb / gutter / sidewalk prep along S. Hazel Ct to W. Florida Ave.

CURRENT TRAVEL & PEDESTRIAN IMPACTS: W. Iowa Ave. is open to local traffic, but watch for intermittent closures during the paving operations. S. Hazel Ct. is only open to local traffic as well during the prep work. Access to Hooker Ct. is being maintained during the inlet work with some minor impacts.

Pedestrian access on W. Iowa Ave. is open — as well as on S. Hazel Ct. — north of the intersection of W. Iowa Ave. and S. Hazel Ct. The pedestrian/bike detour of the Sanderson Gulch Trail is still in place.

  • Please remember that all work schedules are weather + unforeseen circumstances dependent.

Project Impacts

  • Work will be divided into phases, starting at the S. Hazel Court cul-de-sac. Other phases of the work will be on Iowa Ave. between S. Hazel Court and Irving St.; Iowa Ave. between S. Hazel Court and Federal Blvd.; S. Hazel Court between Iowa Ave. and Florida Ave., and at the southeast corner of Florida Ave. and Irving St.
  • One lane of traffic will remain open at all times during the work, providing vehicular and pedestrian access. Traffic control devices will also help ensure that all driveways remain accessible until work necessitates a temporary closure.
  • The intersection of Iowa Ave. & S. Hazel Court will be fully closed at times to allow for the work to be completed in the intersection. Residents will be able to access their driveways on Iowa Ave. via Federal Blvd. or Irving St., and on S. Hazel Court via Florida Ave.
  • Parking will be impacted. Residents will be asked not to park in their driveways when the new curb/gutter and sidewalk is being built near their driveway. Residents will be notified of driveway impacts 48 hours in advance. On-street parking will not be available in the active work zone when the new drainpipe, curb/gutter and sidewalk is being installed, and when asphalt paving operations are underway at the end of the project. Crews will maintain communication with residents regarding available parking areas.
  • The pedestrian trail through Irving & Java Park will be closed where the trails intersect at the end of S. Hazel Court. It will remain closed while crews are installing the pipe, building the outfall into Sanderson Gulch, and constructing the new trail connection to S. Hazel Court. The park will remain open and can be accessed via Irving St. and Federal Blvd. Bike and pedestrian through-traffic will be detoured onto Mexico Ave. via Irving St. and Federal Blvd.
  • Trash service and deliveries will be maintained.
  • Once a phase is completed, that section of roadway will be reopened with intermittent closures as necessary.
